Our Impact

Our Story

Founded in 2023 by Chris and Tash, our story began over 15 years ago when we met and embarked on a journey that would take us across the Atlantic and back again. We finally found our home and our purpose here on the North York Moors on the North East coast of England.

With over 19 years of experience in retail and hospitality, Chris is our head coffee roaster and operational lead. He’s worked with some of the world’s largest companies, applying his deep understanding of complex operational challenges to craft seamless experiences for guests. Before that, Chris spent nine years at Mitchells & Butlers, gaining hands-on experience at every level, from kitchen and bar staff to restaurant manager across the UK.

Armed with a degree in Ceramics and a keen eye for design, Tash is the creative force behind our brand, products, and marketing. With over a decade of experience, she brings a wealth of expertise from her time in retail management in the UK and as a workforce management consultant in the USA. While living in the USA, her entrepreneurial spirit was ignited as she built a successful artisan pottery business, showcasing her meticulous craft and artistic flair. Now, when she isn’t baking, she oversees our brand, marketing, and retail products. An SCA-certified barista, she expertly applies her deep knowledge of both business operations and the customer experience to everything we do.

Forge Valley Roasters is the culmination of our shared journey and combined expertise: a place where Chris’s passion for operational excellence and Tash’s creative vision come together to deliver an exceptional experience in every cup.

FAQs

What makes your coffee special?

We are meticulous with our coffee sourcing and our hands-on approach to roasting. We only roast small batch, we tend to favour naturally processed beans that are usually higher cost to us but have a deeper, more unique flavour profile than you might be used to. We don’t overcomplicate with tasting notes, giving you room to make your own judgement about the flavours and we try to make it simple to choose and learn about our different origins.

What is a 'natural processing' coffee and why do you favour it?

Natural processing is a method of preparing coffee cherries. In this technique, after harvesting, the coffee cherries are dried with the fruit still on the bean. The specific steps in this processingvary between farms. As an example, though, our Honduran coffee from the Aruco Cooperative, deliver their coffee cherries to a central mill, where they are assessed, cleaned, washed, and floated to remove any immature beans. The remaining cherries are then carefully dried in solar tents for 15-20 days, with regular turning to ensure uniform drying. This approach produces a fruit-forward and complex coffee that we think is divine.
