The Story of BW & DJ Glaves Butchers

BW & DJ Glaves & Sons Ltd is one of the North’s premier family-run butchers, supplying exceptionally fine meats, award-winning pies, and quality cuts to local households and discerning food lovers across the region.

Founded in 1972 by Brian and Doreen Glaves, the business began humbly—processing just one beast, three lambs, and two pigs in their very first week, sold through their small shop and mobile van. Financed initially by a generous loan from Brian’s former employer, the couple’s dedication to quality sparked rapid growth. They soon acquired the neighboring wood yard from the Duchy of Lancaster to construct a custom abattoir, lairage, and boning room, expanding their capacity to handle dozens of cattle, sheep, and pigs every single week.

Through changing regulations, industry shifts, and even a devastating fire on April 12th that destroyed their main production facilities, the resilience of the Glaves family never wavered. Thanks to their extraordinary staff, the retail shop reopened just four days after the blaze, with a state-of-the-art abattoir rebuilt a year later. Over time, as consumer demand evolved, the business adapted by converting their facilities into a specialist bakery and preparation area, placing their famous pies, sausages, and ready meals center stage.

Today, the company remains proudly family-owned and operated, with sons James and Antony leading as directors alongside James's wife, Hazel. Their high-street shop has doubled in size, featuring expanded counter space, dedicated wine chillers, and fully stocked ready-meal displays. Along the way, Glaves has built an enviable reputation and earned countless accolades, even drawing praise from top food critics like Tom Parker Bowles, who famously lauded their legendary pork pies in The Mail on Sunday. From humble beginnings to a modern powerhouse of traditional craftsmanship, BW & DJ Glaves continues to deliver top-tier British meats and baked goods to your table, every time.
