The Story of Wellocks: From Yorkshire Greengrocer to Premier Hospitality Supplier

The Wellock family’s passion for exceptional produce began in 1946 when Eric Wellock opened a humble greengrocer’s shop in Silsden, Yorkshire. His son, Richard, carried the mantle forward as a potato merchant, hand-sourcing directly from local farms for regional fish and chip shops before establishing a popular fruit and vegetable stall on Skipton market. In 1961, Richard formally launched Wellocks, seizing a key opportunity in 1980 by hiring veteran sales talent and investing in a delivery fleet to supply fresh produce across the region.

In 1984, Richard’s 19-year-old son, James, joined the business full-time, relentlessly searching Manchester’s markets for higher quality and expanding the company’s wholesale reach. A transformative shift occurred in 1995 when Wellocks began delivering freshly prepared ingredients directly to fine-dining restaurants, pubs, and hotels, eventually adding dry store items to their offer in 2005. Grounded in strong family values, trust, and exceptional service, Wellocks grew to supply over 56% of the UK’s Michelin-starred restaurants.

In 2018, Wellocks joined the William Jackson Food Group, a historic family business founded in Hull in 1851, uniting two companies with shared heritage and long-term values. Today, Wellocks continues to lead the industry through a steadfast commitment to sustainability, working alongside carbon experts to reduce environmental impact across seven key strategic areas aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Backed by a BRCGS Grade AA accreditation for food safety, Wellocks remains dedicated to connecting top-tier producers with the nation's finest kitchens, ensuring transparent sourcing and unmatched quality every time.
